Project Respect’s former Coordinator, Valli Mendez, was one of 20 women inducted onto the 2009 Victorian Honour Roll of Women, recognised for her compassionate and tireless work to support and empower women in the sex industry.
Valli was inducted into the Honour Roll in a ceremony held at the National Gallery of Victoria on 5 March in the lead-up to International Women’s Day on 8 March. The Minister for Women’s Affairs, Maxine Morand, noted: ‘This government is committed to increasing women’s leadership and participation in community life. Each of us can draw inspiration of what is possible when a woman of courage and commitment has a goal for the greater good.’
Valli is a leading Australian activist for the rights of women in the sex industry, succeeding in bringing national attention to the issue of violence against women in the sex industry, including trafficking of women. She started working at Project Respect in 2001 and was the Coordinator from 2005 – 2008. She continues her work there on a community enterprise project, which will train and employ survivors of trafficking.
Valli’s passionate advocacy has resulted in comprehensive outreach programs to women in the sex industry in the Cities of Yarra and Monash, the Victorian Government funding Australia’s first shelter for trafficked women, and $250,000 being awarded to Project Respect from the Australian Government to expand its outreach program.
Valli says, “I’m probably most proud of the direct contact with the women – treating them with dignity and humanity. To me the women are not just clients, they are human beings.”
The Project Respect community feels privileged to share Valli’s passion and commitment for the advancement of women’s rights. We are proud of her achievements and delighted to see her work recognised. Congratulations Valli!
